Techniques for Information Gathering

Information gathering is done to gather and understand the desired system requirements in the development of information systems. Some questions that need to be made the focus of activity in the utaka gathering this information are:
  • What are the business operations and processes?
  • How should those operations be performed?
  • What information is needed to perform those operations?

To be able to answer these questions in order to establish requirements and models required by the new system, then there are three things that need to be understood before i.e.

Understand the new system constraints, which need to be understood in advance limitations or the scope of the system to be built. To gain an understanding of this, the following activities can be performed:
  1. Matter of questionnaires, in which the contents of the questionnaire can be some of the questions or statements related to the expectations of the system to be built. This questionnaire can be shared and filled in by users or clients.
  2. Interview users, whenever possible and time owned quite a lot, then conduct interviews with users can also be made to obtain information related to the expectations of the system It will be built. When the time is quite narrow and would still like to do interviews, then do the interviews with key users who felt sufficiently representative.

Understand the new system procedures, which need to be understood in advance the procedures that will run on the new system. To gain an understanding of this activity, existing documentation review needs to be done. This activity can be done by studying the documentation-documentation of the system that is running.

Understand the new system functions, which need to be understood in advance about any functions that need to be owned by a new system. To gain an understanding of terhadal this case, the following activities can be performed:
  1. Observe the business procedures, on which the observation is done directly to the operations of the existing procedures of the business processes running. This is done in order to find out about things that should be improved in order to comply with the new system to be built.
  2. Research vendors solutions, by studying the business solutions and technology offered by the vendors. These solutions need to be tailored to your needs or business environment of the company.
