Internet vs Intranet

What internet? What Intranet?

In this section we will consider the similarities and differences between internet and intranet. The Internet is a public network. Each user can access the Internet with the assumption that the user has an account with an Internet service provider (ISP). The Internet is a worldwide network, while the intranet is private and does not need to be essential to connect to the World Wide Web (WWW). Intranet network connected to a particular company, and users usually employees of the company. Intranet itself is separated from the Internet through a firewall (or some firewalls). Intranet usually have throughput and higher performance compared with the Internet and is generally more secure than the Internet.

In addition to the above-mentioned other differences, the two have much in common. Both use the same network technology, TCP / IP, and both can use a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Both use the pages in HTML and XML, and both are able to bring the pages in a multimedia format. In addition, they also can use the Java programming language to develop applications. As will be discussed in the previous section, Java is an application development platform that can use a PC with a simple computer network and equipped with a small memory and even almost no hard drive. Java applications normally usually resides on the server and will be sent to the client as needed, centralization of data storage on the server and computer administration easy. Java download as part of the source code, known as applets, from the server to the client upon request, without looking at his platform computer.

Intranet may or may not use one of the HTML-based technologies (ie, Java programming, Java Applets, JavaScript or VBScript, Active X, Dynamic HTML) or XML. The advantage of the Intranet is that since the beginning, the organization can control the browser used, and can determine the browser that will support the technology used. By using the Web page, organizations can also specify the use of the internet telephone, e-mail, videoconferencing, and other Web technologies supported supported by the browser.
