Discovery
The Internet allows users to access information located in databases worldwide. By way of browsing and searching the data over the web, users can apply the Internet search capabilities (internet's discovery capability), in the scope of the areas of education, government services, entertainment and buying and selling. To perform these tasks, users usually use:
- Search engines and Metasearch engines. Search engines are computer programs that look for specific information, using the key words, then the results will be displayed. While the metasearch engine will search using multiple engines at once, and then integrate these findings to answer queries from users.

- Publication of Material in Foreign Languages. Internet not only provides information, but also the information written from various languages. To translate the information with a certain language, users can take advantage of a wide range of products translators, for example AltaVista and Google translate.

- Portals. Portal is a gateway personalization of information and web-based knowledge, and menyedian relevant information from a variety of IT systems and the Internet, by using the advanced search and indexing techniques. Portal is divided into 4 types: commercial, affinity, corporate and industrywide.
Communication
There are various types of communication technologies, including e-mail, call center, chat and voice:
- Electronic mail (e-mail) is an application that works with the largest capacity in the Internet. Many users even replace telephones with e-mail.
- If we want to need advice from technical support from software vendors, usually the contact call center by using e-mail, telephone or voice and other web sessions (video conferencing, etc.).
- Chat room is a virtual meeting place, where various users interact with each other. There are 2 types a chat program: a web-based chat programs and e-mail-based (Text only) program known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC).
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), digitizes the analog signal from the noise, then made in the form of packets and sent over the internet. Skype, providing free VoIP services. Besides being able to do voice and video calls, users can also send instant messaging, SMS, voice mail, group chat and conference call as many as 9 people.
